Autonomous agents pose AI security risks. This article explains how companies can take proactive measures to mitigate these risks.

The New Reality of AI Agents

Companies use AI to optimize processes, automate support, and make data-driven decisions. Things get particularly exciting—and at the same time, tricky—when so-called AI agents come into play. These aren’t just smart tools that make suggestions or generate text; they are autonomous systems that independently perform tasks, access systems, and make decisions. They act like digital employees, and that is precisely what makes them so valuable. But also so dangerous.

Because as these systems become more autonomous, new and often underestimated AI security risks emerge. What happens if an AI agent gains access to sensitive customer data and processes it incorrectly or even leaks it to the outside world? What if it is manipulated from the outside or accidentally triggers processes that have massive financial or data protection consequences?

At a time when companies are increasingly relying on automated processes, it is essential to develop an awareness of the security risks posed by autonomous AI agents in companies. After all, anyone working with highly intelligent systems must also address their potential downsides before it’s too late.

In this article, we take an in-depth look at the dangers that autonomous AI agents can pose and highlight how companies can effectively protect themselves. This is not about scaremongering, but about education: those who understand the risks can handle the opportunities responsibly.

What are AI agents—and how do they differ from traditional AI tools?

When people talk about artificial intelligence in business, many first think of tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, or automated analysis programs. These systems provide suggestions, analyze data, or write text, but always in response to a specific user command. They have no goal of their own, no leeway for action, and no autonomy. They are, in the traditional sense, tools.

AI agents, on the other hand, go a decisive step further. They work purposefully, autonomously, and act independently within defined parameters. You don’t just give them a prompt; you give them a goal. For example, an AI agent might be tasked with processing incoming support tickets, categorizing new leads in the CRM system, or handling orders independently. To do this, it accesses various systems, makes decisions based on data, and even learns from its successes or mistakes.

Sound efficient? It is. But it is precisely this autonomy that brings new AI security risks. After all, a system that has access to interfaces, databases, or communication channels quickly becomes an unmanageable black box if it is not properly monitored and controlled. Unlike traditional tools, an AI agent can thus be a “digital colleague” with permissions. And just like with human colleagues, the question arises: What is it allowed to do? What does it know? And what is it actually doing right now?

The increasing prevalence of these agents thus places new responsibilities on companies. They must learn to manage a new form of digital identity. Managing these identities differs fundamentally from traditional user management, and this is precisely where the potential for security risks posed by autonomous AI agents in companies lies—risks that have often been underestimated until now.

What security risks do AI agents pose?

Autonomous AI agents are powerful, but as with any new technology, their use also carries significant risks. Companies that deploy these digital assistants without clear rules and protective measures run the risk of initiating uncontrollable processes, exposing confidential data, or even compromising their IT infrastructure. The following AI security risks are particularly relevant: 

Misuse of Access Credentials

For an AI agent to access systems, it requires authentication, such as API keys, tokens, or even access to user accounts. If these are hard-coded, poorly secured, or reused, they can easily fall into the wrong hands. A compromised agent can thus cause enormous damage, such as deleting, manipulating, or unauthorizedly forwarding data.

Particularly critical: These digital identities are often difficult to trace and do not appear in traditional user lists, which makes monitoring difficult. 

Shadow IT caused by hidden agents

In many teams, new AI agents emerge from individual initiatives, such as when an employee develops a handy script that automatically forwards orders or processes internal requests. These agents are often not officially registered or documented. The result is classic shadow IT: systems that operate outside the radar of IT security and provide an ideal gateway for attacks.

Misjudgments due to incorrect data or context

AI agents make decisions based on data, but if this data is incomplete, outdated, or misleading, the agent’s actions can be harmful. A sales agent might use outdated customer data to send inappropriate offers, or a support agent might incorrectly escalate an issue, with real business consequences.

Important: Unlike traditional programs, agents are adaptive; they do not always behave the same way. Misbehavior is therefore harder to predict and test. 

External Manipulation via Prompt Injection or API Hijacking

As soon as AI systems access external data sources such as emails, websites, or user inputs, the risk of targeted manipulation increases. Attackers can deliberately design such inputs to trick the agent into performing malicious actions, such as overwriting configuration files, disclosing confidential information, or disabling security-related functions. This form of so-called prompt injection is considered particularly insidious because it can be implemented with minimal effort and often goes undetected. 

Data Protection Violations Due to Unauthorized Access

Many agents work with personal data: customer names, addresses, call histories. If this data is processed without a specific purpose or legal basis, or even transferred to other systems, there is a risk of serious violations of data protection regulations such as the GDPR. Unlike human employees, agents lack the “gut feeling” for which information is worth protecting; they act strictly according to rules and without context awareness.

Response times improve, leads feel taken seriously, and the sales team is happy to have more time for negotiations. But then a serious incident occurs.  > > A prospective client sends a very open-ended inquiry via email: “Could you please send me a few examples of successfully implemented projects in my industry?” The AI agent interprets the request correctly, searches the internal drive for similar projects, and finds what it’s looking for. It not only attaches the approved brochure with anonymized success stories but also a detailed project report on a current major client, which includes sensitive data, budget figures, and contact persons. The document was not classified or protected by access permissions; instead, it was openly stored in a folder to which the AI agent had full access.  > > The prospective client reacts with irritation, points out the document, and, for compliance reasons, sends it directly to his company’s legal department. Within 24 hours, the incident is made public. The affected major client, a corporation with a strict non-disclosure agreement, demands immediate clarification and threatens to terminate the contract.  > > The internal investigation reveals: > > - The AI agent’s access rights were not sufficiently restricted > - There was no login that could precisely show why the agent had selected this document > - Employees were not trained on how to handle such systems or what risks exist.  > - The agent had not been subject to a standard IT security audit; it was considered an “intelligent assistant,” not an independent actor. > > What can we learn from this? This use case exemplifies how security risks posed by autonomous AI agents in companies can quickly become a reality, especially when processes are automated too quickly without accompanying safeguards. Technically, the AI agent did nothing “wrong”; it fulfilled its mission. But without contextual understanding, access restrictions, and human oversight, efficiency quickly turns into a massive AI security risk.

How can companies minimize these risks

The good news: Companies are not defenseless against the risks posed by AI agents. Those who address the specific AI security risks and take proactive measures can leverage the potential of autonomous systems without losing control. The key is to treat AI agents not as tools, but as digital employees: They need clear tasks, defined permissions, and regular monitoring. 

Treat Agents Like Digital Identities

A frequently underestimated point: AI agents are not passive tools, but active digital entities. They should therefore be treated like human users, with individually assigned access rights, roles, and responsibilities. What this means in practice:

  • Each agent is assigned a unique identifier. 
  • Access to systems is strictly limited (“least privilege”).
  • Permissions are regularly reviewed and revoked as needed.
  • Agents are not allowed to do “everything,” but only what is necessary.

Document behavior and make it transparent 

Traceability is a critical security factor. Companies should systematically record every action taken by an agent, whether it’s sending an email, accessing a file, or making an internal decision. Specifically, this means:

  • Comprehensive logging of all an agent’s actions.
  • Storage of the basis for decisions (e.g., what data led to the action). 
  • Audit functions to enable a rapid response to incidents.
  • Logs that are not only machine-readable but also formatted for human evaluation.

This transparency is essential not only for identifying AI security risks but also for analyzing them retrospectively and learning from them.

“Contain” agents in a controlled environment

An AI agent should never be allowed to “roam freely throughout the entire network” unsupervised. Therefore, it makes sense to integrate it into a secure, isolated environment, similar to software sandboxes or container solutions. What does this mean in practice?

  • A sales agent has access only to CRM and marketing materials, not to customer data from support.
  • Data being processed is explicitly approved and pre-structured.
  • Actions involving critical risk (e.g., sending, deletion, escalation) require approval by a human employee (“human-in-the-loop”).

Time-Limiting Access and Permissions

Many agents work continuously with the same login credentials, which poses a huge risk. A better approach is one that uses temporary access tokens that are regularly renewed and activated only when needed. Advantages:

  • Even if a token is compromised, its usefulness is severely limited. 
  • An agent automatically loses access when it is no longer active.
  • Vulnerabilities caused by “orphaned” agents (e.g., after a project) are reduced.

Define clear responsibilities

Every AI agent needs a human owner—that is, a person or team responsible for it. This is the only way to ensure that regular reviews take place, updates are installed, and new risks are identified. Practical implementation:

  • Document responsibilities (e.g., in an internal agent registry).
  • Mandatory semi-annual security reviews.
  • Train responsible personnel on AI-specific security issues.

Raise awareness among employees, even those without technical roles

It’s not just developers or admins who need to be in the know; users in marketing, sales, HR, or procurement are increasingly using AI agents. Lack of knowledge is one of the biggest risk factors. Recommended measures:

  • Internal training on the safe use of AI.
  • Guidelines (“Dos & Don’ts”) for the use of autonomous systems.
  • A clearly defined process for approving new agents (e.g., via IT security officers).

Establish AI governance and avoid merely reacting on an ad hoc basis

In the long term, companies need an overarching governance model that strategically guides the use of AI agents. This includes technical standards, ethical guidelines, risk analyses, and internal approval processes. Key elements:

  • Documentation of all deployed agents and their functions.
  • Risk assessments prior to deployment.
  • A catalog of measures in the event of misconduct or security incidents. 
  • Integration into existing compliance and data protection processes

Outlook: The Future of AI Security

The development of autonomous AI agents is advancing at a breathtaking pace. What is still considered a technological breakthrough today could well be standard practice tomorrow. At the same time, demands for security, traceability, and control are growing. For with every additional capability an AI agent takes on, the potential impact of misconduct also increases. AI security risks thus become a constant companion and a central topic of strategic corporate management.

Many companies are currently in a transitional phase. Initial AI projects have been successfully implemented, often initiated by individual departments or dedicated teams. However, deployment often still takes place without an overarching structure, without binding standards, and without long-term planning. What is missing is a holistic approach: a governance strategy that integrates technical, legal, and organizational aspects. Only in this way can the security risks posed by autonomous AI agents in companies be made manageable in the long term. 

This development is driven not only by internal corporate requirements but increasingly also by regulatory mandates. The EU AI Act, for example, makes it clear that AI systems can no longer be viewed as mere tools but as independent technologies with high risk and potential impact. In the future, it will no longer be sufficient to react to security incidents. Companies will have to demonstrate that they systematically identify, assess, and minimize risks. Transparency, control, and traceability are becoming mandatory, not optional.

But AI security is more than a question of technology or legislation. It is becoming a cultural issue. Companies that are willing to take responsibility and deal openly with risks will be the ones best equipped to handle the challenges of the AI future. This requires a new way of thinking: security can no longer be viewed as an isolated task for individual departments. It must be embedded in the organization’s DNA, as a matter of course and as a shared goal.

Those who approach security with foresight build trust among customers, partners, and employees. And those who build trust lay the foundation for sustainable innovation. Because one thing is certain: autonomous AI agents will continue to transform our working world. The question is no longer whether they are coming, but how well we are prepared for them. Companies that are already addressing AI security risks today and building the necessary structures are turning uncertainty into strength and technology into a genuine competitive advantage.
